Bavaria: State head of family businesses criticizes sanctions

Geltendorf (dpa / lby) - The chairman of the state association of family businesses in the Free State, Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, has criticized the sanctions of the European Union against Russia. "It's nonsensical to impose sanctions that destroy ourselves," said the Wittelsbach prince of the "Augsburger Allgemeine" (Friday edition). "The democracies of the world will only remain viable if they are also financially viable."

Because of the sanctions as a result of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, oil and gas are becoming increasingly scarce. That's why it has to be imported more expensively from countries like Saudi Arabia or Qatar, "which aren't the holiest on earth either," said Luitpold von Bayern. In his view, "it would have made more sense to make Russia subject to the condition that oil and gas should only be bought at marginal costs or that profits from Russian suppliers be skimmed off by means of a tariff."

A complete stop to gas supplies from Russia would have drastic consequences for Bavarian breweries like his own in Geltendorf (Landsberg am Lech district), emphasized Luitpold von Bayern. "Then there will be less beer, quite simply."
