Honorary degrees were awarded to two British cave divers who saved 12 Thai boys and their coach from a cave in Thailand.

John Volanthen from Bristol and Rick Stanton from Coventry were both involved in the dramatic events of July 2018.

They navigated nearly 1.6 miles (2km) through narrow underwater passageways against a strong current.

University of Bristol presented the honorary degree.

After heavy rains had trapped 12 members of a junior soccer team and their coach in Tham Luang (a cave complex in northern Thailand), Mr Volanthen, and Mr Stanton were summoned by the Thai Government.

"It was unheard of, and nothing can compare." It is being cited as the greatest rescue of all time by many," stated Mr Stanton.

It took two-and-a half weeks to complete and required you to think outside of the box. The procedures were written from scratch, and there was no manual. This was the first time this had ever been done.

Mr Volanthen was 47 years old at the time of rescue, while Mr Stanton was just 57.

They were awarded their honorary degrees Wednesday at the University of Bristol's summer graduates.

Linda Wilson, Vice President of the University of Bristol’s Spelaeological society, nominated John & Rick for honorary degrees.

Ms Wilson stated that Rick, John, and other rescue divers were being asked for an impossible task.

"Thanks to their extraordinary courage and meticulous planning, they were able to overcome all odds and pull off one of the most remarkable rescues ever attempted.

"Keeping all 12 boys and their coach alive in the most dangerous conditions possible."

Stanton stated that it was an "absolute honor" to be awarded the award.

Volanthen said, "It's an honor and humbling to receive the same and have achieved far more than me,"

They were both awarded George Medals for gallantry, which is a nonmilitary award.

Ms Wilson said that Rick and John are the best examples of the University's values - resilience and courage, outstanding skills, and exceptional leadership - and they saved the lives and health of many others while taking on their own lives."
