Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Greifswald elects future town hall boss

Can Stefan Fassbinder, East Germany's only mayor of the Greens, defend his office? Elections will take place in Greifswald on Sunday. CDU man Tilo Lorenz wants to keep his mayoral office in Burg Stargard.

Greifswald (dpa/mv) - On Sunday, Greifswald residents are called upon to elect their mayor for the next seven years. Incumbent Stefan Fassbinder (Greens) - according to his own party the first and only mayor of the Greens in East Germany - wants to defend the town hall. He is supported by the SPD, the Left and the Animal Welfare Party.

Six candidates are running against Fassbinder: Madeleine Tolani (CDU), Konstantin Zirwick (FDP), Ina Schuppa-Wittfoth (Die Basis), Lea Alexandra Siewert (Die Party), Gamal Khalil (individual applicant) and Daniel Küther (individual applicant). A possible run-off election is scheduled for June 26th.

Residents of Burg Stargard near Neubrandenburg are also called upon to elect their mayor on Sunday. Here incumbent Tilo Lorenz from the CDU is up against Katja Sievert (Stargard 2030 voting group).
