Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Judiciary in the north-east is looking for lay judges

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The courts in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are looking for volunteers as lay judges. "In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, at least 2,950 people are being sought for the nomination lists of the municipalities and youth welfare committees, from which 1,475 lay judges will then be elected," said the Ministry of Justice in Schwerin on Wednesday. The term of office starts in January 2024 and lasts five years.

In order to have the required volunteers together in time, Justice Minister Jacqueline Bernhardt (left) wants to start drawing up the list at an early stage. On Thursday (5:00 p.m.) she is therefore organizing an information evening together with Schwerin's Mayor Rico Badenschier (SPD) in the Golden Hall of the Neustadt Palais in the state capital.

Bernhardt sees the jury service as an important part of democratic adjudication: "It guarantees that judgments are made in the name of the people, but also by the people." According to Badenschier, the courts in Schwerin alone need 152 women and men for voluntary work in the judiciary.
