Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Medical care station for seals opened

Rostock (dpa/mv) - Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) has opened a medical supply station for seals at the seal research center in Rostock-Hohe Düne. If a seal is discovered on the beach, there is now the chance to take care of it in an animal-friendly manner and then release it back into nature, Backhaus said on Monday. So far, the killing of found seals could not be avoided due to a lack of accommodation and supply options. More than 18,000 euros have been invested in the project via the animal shelter funding guideline.

According to Backhaus, funding for facilities for sick, injured or helpless wild animals is also possible within the framework of this guideline. It has been possible to continuously increase the annual funding to 350,000 euros. Every year, the sum is exhausted to a few euros, said Backhaus. "The need is great." The animals should be cared for appropriately and released back into the wild after recovery.
