Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: "Racial profiling": Greens accuse the government of inaction

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The Greens accuse the state government in Schwerin of doing too little against racism in the police force. "The fact that people are stopped and checked by the police just because of their appearance happens every day in Germany, including in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The Anti-Racism Commission of the Council of Europe is therefore concerned and has now again reprimanded the federal and state governments for inaction", said the domestic policy spokeswoman for the Greens parliamentary group, Constanze Oehlrich, on Monday in Schwerin.

The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), set up by the Council of Europe, drew the attention of the federal and state governments to the problem of so-called "racial profiling" in police work as early as 2007, i.e. the targeted control of people based on their external appearance or ethnicity belonging. Oehlrich complained that Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania had not yet implemented the recommendations of the independent human rights body. This includes ongoing observation of the problem and addressing it in police training.
