Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: The left demands a poverty report from its own state government

Ivenack (dpa/mv) - The left parliamentary group has called for the preparation of a poverty report for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. "In order to be able to take countermeasures in a targeted manner, we need the appropriate information," explained the left-wing social politician Steffi Pulz-Debler on Friday on the sidelines of a closed meeting of her parliamentary group in Ivenack (Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district). In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the left is part of the government led by Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD).

The issue of mobility is particularly difficult for poor people in rural areas, said Pulz-Debler. Those affected could only insufficiently take advantage of visits to the doctor, shopping or cultural and educational offers. Offers, especially in the areas of health and education, should therefore not be further centralized; options close to home are needed.

A lack of education, unemployment and low wages are the main causes of poverty. It was said that MV had relied on an image as a low-wage country for too long. For the long-term unemployed, Pulz-Debler continued to call for regionalized support measures that would enable them to start a job that would secure their livelihood.
