North Rhine-Westphalia: Gorißen welcomes Özdemir plans for wheat cultivation

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalian Minister of Agriculture Silke Gorißen (CDU) has welcomed the plans of Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir (Greens) to allow more wheat cultivation in Germany in view of the Ukraine war. Özdemir is thus setting the right course for the absolutely necessary food production "shortly before sowing," said the CDU politician on Saturday. "This ensures more planning security for our 33,000 farmers in North Rhine-Westphalia."

According to his ministry, a proposal submitted by Özdemir on Friday provides for a one-time suspension of the new EU regulations on set-aside and crop rotation. Accordingly, among other things, the actually planned additional species protection areas should not be introduced until 2024. Farmers could then continue to grow food on these areas in the coming year.
