North Rhine-Westphalia: NRW is expecting a warm and colorful October weekend

Temperatures on the last weekend in October remain above 20 degrees. The last days of summer invite you to go hiking, cycling or visiting the beer garden.

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - Get out of your jacket and off to the last sundae: North Rhine-Westphalia is expecting a particularly warm October weekend. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), there will be sun on Saturday in addition to a temporary passage of dense cloud fields - it should remain dry at 20 to 24 degrees. On Sunday it will also remain mostly clear. The temperatures will be between 20 and 24 degrees, according to the DWD forecast. For comparison: scientists speak of a "summer day" as soon as the temperatures exceed the 25 degree mark.

The reasons for the mild October end are the "Zacharias" high pressure area over Eastern Europe and the "Iris" low pressure area over the North Atlantic. According to the DWD, they are currently ensuring that an air mass that is unusually warm for the time of year is moving to Germany via Spain and France.

The effects could already be felt on Friday night. According to the DWD, it was the warmest ever measured in Germany at the end of October. The leader was in NRW - in Werl in the district of Soest. The temperature there did not drop below 18.5 degrees. "That's only 1.5 degrees below a tropical night," said Andreas Friedrich from the DWD.

The weather should not only invite you to bike tours, visits to the beer garden or stroll through the flea market. When hiking through the surrounding nature, you can currently experience a true blaze of color on the leaves. "In autumn, the chlorophyll in the leaves is broken down, the components migrate to the branches and trunk, where they are stored," the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Agriculture recently explained. The yellow-red pigments then remained in the leaves.

If you prefer to enjoy the last warm days of the year at home, balconies - your own balcony - should also be a good option. According to the DWD, the 141 hours of sunshine in October in NRW are already well above the monthly average. Even potted plants can stay outside.
