North Rhine-Westphalia: roommate stabbed in his sleep: eight years in prison

A man from Recklinghausen kills a roommate. Now he has been convicted of murder.

Bochum (dpa / lnw) - After a fatal knife attack, a mentally ill man from Recklinghausen was sentenced to eight years in prison for murder on Wednesday. The accused stabbed his sleeping roommate on the morning of February 26, 2022. The 55-year-old bled to death within minutes. According to the verdict, the background to the crime was an acute psychosis. In the trial at the Bochum district court, the 41-year-old accused spoke of voices in his head that would have ordered him to murder.

Perpetrator and victim are both from Romania. They were migrant workers in Recklinghausen and had lived there in a four-person flat-sharing community. According to the verdict, there had been no dispute either in the past or in the hours before the murder.

The fact that the 41-year-old was not sentenced to life imprisonment has to do with his more serious mental illness. He had been found in court to be less criminally responsible. The judgment is not final.
