North Rhine-Westphalia: soldiers clean war cemeteries

Bonn (dpa / lnw) - Bundeswehr soldiers cleaned a war cemetery with 1800 memorial stones and grave slabs in Bonn for ten days in preparation for the day of national mourning. Among other things, the soldiers realigned crooked stones and crosses and freed them from moss and lichen growth, as a spokeswoman for the city of Bonn reported. According to the information, not only soldiers are buried in the Bonn North Cemetery, but also victims of the bombing war, forced laborers and prisoners of war.

Mayor Katja Dörner (Greens) thanked the soldiers for their commitment. "In times when war is raging within Europe, it is more important than ever to stand up for peace and freedom and to remember the terrible events of past wars," she said.

Generalleutnant Martin Schelleis declared: "The sheer number of deaths in the last world war is unimaginable. Especially in a place like this war cemetery in the North Cemetery, the dead remind us to keep the peace." The Environment Agency of the City of Bonn normally takes care of the regular green maintenance at the war graves.
