Baden-Württemberg: artist from Brandenburg receives art prize "Kubus"

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Until recently, one of her works was still on display in the Stuttgart State Gallery, now the artist Ulla von Brandenburg is receiving the "Kubus" art prize, which is endowed with 20,000 euros. The award is presented by the neighboring Kunstmuseum Stuttgart and the Sparda-Bank Baden-Württemberg. The 48-year-old exhibits internationally, has a professorship at the Karlsruhe Art Academy and lives in Paris.

According to the art museum, elements of theatre, dance and folklore merge into stage-like productions in the award-winner's multimedia installations. "The artist intervenes in the sober architecture of the white cube by means of colours, floor-to-ceiling lengths of fabric, three-dimensional objects, videos and performances, thus creating sensually charged spaces in which visitors can immerse themselves," the house said. The boundaries between performance and reality, between performers and audience, became blurred.

The "Kubus" jury also praised Brandenburg. For this year's "Kubus. Sparda Art Prize" exhibition, she realized a concept that renegotiated forms of remembrance and ritual events. "Visual form and narrative, which the artist develops against the background of traditional sculptural approaches, form an effective and coherent connection," it said on Friday.

The "Kubus" art prize was awarded for the fifth time. Camill Leberer and Ülkü Süngün were also nominated. The trio had to address sculptural issues from different perspectives, and the presentations were then shown in the art museum.
