Saxony-Anhalt: East German cities call for gas and electricity price brakes

Wittenberg (dpa/sa) - In view of the energy crisis, the mayors of several East German cities have called for quick results when planning the gas and electricity price brake. "The gas price brake and the electricity price brake are both absolutely necessary and overdue in order to dampen energy prices noticeably," said Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung (SPD) on Friday at a conference of the German Association of Cities in Wittenberg.

Specifically, for private households, a basic requirement of 80 percent of the previous year's consumption of gas must be discounted, said Jung. This gives planning security and creates incentives to save energy. In addition to private households, according to Jung, the price brake should also apply to "social, cultural and sporting facilities, companies and cities". In addition, the municipal utilities would have to be protected and, among other things, the obligation to file for insolvency would have to be suspended for them.

From the point of view of the German Association of Cities, support for the municipal hospitals is also required. Specifically, the federal government should provide inflation compensation and reintroduce the corona supply surcharge.
