Saxony: Man threatens deportation after 35 years

Chemnitz/Dresden (dpa/sn) - The fate of a Vietnamese from Chemnitz who is threatened with deportation moves many people. A petition launched on Friday by the Saxon Refugee Council to the state parliament had already found more than 36,000 supporters by Sunday noon. The Refugee Council wants to ensure that the man who has lived in Saxony for 35 years can stay in Germany with his family. Pham Phi Son came to the GDR from Vietnam in 1987 as a contract worker, it says. Now the Chemnitz native is threatened with deportation because he was in Vietnam for more than six months in 2016 for medical treatment. The country's hardship commission has rejected a right to stay, so that deportation is now threatened.
