Thuringia: Recommendation for child vaccination: KVT expects little rush

Erfurt (dpa/th) - According to the Stiko recommendation for corona vaccinations for healthy children between five and eleven years of age, the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Thuringia (KVT) does not expect significantly more vaccinations in this age group. One or the other child will certainly still be vaccinated, but overall he is only assuming a slightly increased demand, said a KVT spokesman on Tuesday. The general interest in vaccination has decreased significantly in recent weeks.

In Thuringia, 11.3 percent of children between the ages of five and eleven have received at least one corona vaccination. That's one of the lowest rates nationwide. According to the Robert Koch Institute, it is highest in Schleswig-Holstein at 30.5 percent.

In its current assessment, the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) now also recommends a corona vaccination for healthy children between the ages of five and eleven. In contrast to the vaccination schedule for other groups, they should initially only receive one mRNA vaccine dose, according to a statement by the committee on Tuesday. So far, the vaccination had only been recommended for children with previous illnesses or people with a high corona risk in the area.

According to the KVT, children in Thuringia can be vaccinated both in the practices of the resident pediatricians and in the vaccination centers. Here, however, children's vaccinations are only possible on Saturdays. There was enough vaccine, it said. According to an overview by the Ministry of Health at the end of April, around 22,500 doses of the child vaccine from the manufacturer Biontech were last stored in the country's central vaccine warehouse.
