Defense against renewed attacks: Ukraine destroys "several Russian missiles" over Kyiv

The Ukrainian air force is in constant use to fend off the ongoing Russian attacks. While she shoots down an Iranian drone in Chernihiv in the north of the country, Russian missiles are successfully destroyed in the capital Kyiv. But there is no all-clear for the people.

According to Ukrainian sources, Russia has again tried to attack the center of the capital Kyiv with rockets. Ukrainian anti-aircraft batteries shot down "several Russian missiles" over Kyiv, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram. The air alert is not over yet, the air defense is "still in action", wrote Klitschko and asked the residents to stay in shelters. AFP reporters had previously heard several explosions in central Kyiv.

Since Monday, Russia has repeatedly attacked the Ukrainian capital, also targeting the energy infrastructure. Five people were killed, including a pregnant woman.

Shortly before the explosions on Wednesday, the governor of the Kyiv region, Oleksiy Kuleba, announced on Telegram that the air defense system was "on duty" in this area. The governor of the Vinnitsia region, southwest of Kyiv, also stated on Telegram that the area had been shelled by Russian rockets. He called on residents to stay in shelters.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian army announced that it shot down two Russian missiles in the Chernihiv region in the north of the country. According to the governor, an Iranian-made drone exploded in Chernihiv, the capital of the region of the same name.

The Ukrainian Air Force says it has destroyed 223 Iranian drones since mid-September. Tehran has repeatedly denied supplying weapons and drones to Russia. However, the European Union has now announced that it has "sufficient evidence" that drones used by Russia against Ukraine came from Iran. According to diplomats, the ambassadors of the EU countries are now preparing further sanctions against Iran.
