In the classic compact class, the selection is really huge - VW Golf, Opel Astra, Toyota Corolla or Ford Focus can be found there, among others. The Ceed from Kia is also a representative. How does it fare as a used vehicle?

As if Kia had to distance itself from its South Korean origins, the manufacturer talks about its compact class of a "true European". Which is also largely true: because the second generation of the Ceed under consideration was also designed in the Kia design center in Frankfurt am Main, developed in the research and development center in Rüsselsheim and produced in the Kia plant in Žilina in Slovakia.

The model name stands for "Community of Europe with European Design". The segment where it competes against cars like VW Golf or Opel Astra is popular on the continent. However, the Ceed does not exactly cause leaps and bounds during the main inspection.

Model history

After the widely acclaimed launch of the model series in 2007, the second generation came onto the market in 2012. It was on sale until 2018 - more streamlined, variable in the interior and more varied. The facelift from 2015 was inconspicuous on the outside, brought a dual-clutch transmission for the first time and Kia's new three-cylinder petrol engine at the time.

You had to choose between the hatchback with five doors in Golf format, which is typical of the compact class, the station wagon with the additional abbreviation "sw" (Sportswagon) and the coupé-like three-door Pro Cee'd, which came into the showrooms in 2013.

4.31 to 4.51 meters x 1.78 meters x 1.47 to 1.49 meters (L x W x H), trunk volume: Pro Ceed: 380 to 1225 liters; Ceed: 380 to 1318 liters; Ceed sw: 528 to 1642 liters.

Strengthen

The space is good and variable, the chassis is precisely tuned, the design often meets the customer's taste. The springs and dampers perform well at the HU, and the brake lines and hoses are "perfect" according to the "Auto Bild Tüv Report 2022".

Indicators and exhaust system harvest comparatively few complaints. The oil loss also remains below average, while the emissions test (AU) rarely poses problems for the Kia.

weaknesses

The report writes: "Flawless specimens are consistently underrepresented at the HU." On the chassis side, the Ceed received high complaint rates at the second check.

Also under criticism: misaligned low beam, defective headlights and taillights as well as brake discs, which are too often worn out from the second HU at the age of three years. The function of foot and parking brake weakened throughout.

Mixed verdict from the ADAC: While younger copies from the year of first registration 2017 do well in the club's breakdown statistics, 2012 was "a problem year".

Kias from 2013 and 2014 are still below average, while those from 2015 and 2016 appear in the middle of the data collection. Main breakdowns are battery (2012 to 2016) and spark plugs (2012).

The engine

2nd generation: petrol engines (three and four-cylinder with front-wheel drive): 72 kW/99 hp to 150 kW/204 hp; Diesel (four-cylinder with front-wheel drive): 66 kW/90 hp to 100 kW/136 kW.
