Defense system and ammunition: US to deliver more weapons for 800 million dollars

The United States put together the next major arms package for Ukraine. President Biden wants to seal this in the coming days. Meanwhile, Chancellor Scholz declares that further deliveries will be based on the USA.

US President Joe Biden has promised more arms sales to Ukraine to the tune of more than $800 million. His government is planning a corresponding announcement in the coming days, he said at the end of the NATO summit in Madrid. These include a new modern Western air defense system and additional ammunition for the "HIMARS" rocket launcher system, which Kyiv has already received.

Since the beginning of the war at the end of February, the USA has promised or already delivered weapons and equipment worth almost seven billion US dollars (6.73 billion euros) to the country attacked by Russia.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz had previously announced that Germany was primarily looking to the USA for further arms deliveries to Ukraine. "We always base what we do on the deliveries of the allies, especially the United States. And we will continue to do so," he said in the Spanish capital.

A few days ago, the first heavy weapons from Germany arrived in the Ukraine in the form of seven self-propelled howitzers. Three more systems are to follow. In addition, anti-aircraft tanks, air defense systems and multiple rocket launchers, among other things, have been promised.

So far, however, NATO countries have not supplied certain weapon systems at all, for example combat aircraft and battle tanks. However, there are talks between Germany and Spain about a possible delivery of German-made "Leopard 2" main battle tanks, which now belong to the Spanish armed forces.
