"You'll never walk alone": Scholz wants to relieve citizens with housing benefit reform

In view of the high energy prices, the federal government wants to relieve the burden on citizens with a housing benefit reform. It should come early next year - among other things, benefit a larger group of beneficiaries.

To relieve low-income citizens from the high energy prices, the federal government is planning a "major housing benefit reform". "At the beginning of next year" it should expand the group of eligible households and "integrate a flat-rate heating fee, so to speak, permanently," said Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin.

Pensioners should benefit "particularly" from this. He also spoke of a heating subsidy. The chancellor said: "You'll never walk alone" - nobody will be left alone.

Scholz made the announcement as part of the presentation of a multi-billion dollar rescue package for the ailing energy company Uniper. Gas customers will also face further price increases due to a surcharge. The levy will come on October 1st or September 1st.
