Baden-Württemberg: Hohenlohe pear brandy protected throughout the EU

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The geographical indication for pear schnapps from the Hohenlohe region in north-eastern Baden-Württemberg has been protected throughout the EU since this week. As can be seen from the EU register of geographical indications, "Hohenloher pear brandy / Hohenloher pear water" were registered on Tuesday. In the future, only pear brandies will be allowed to bear the title "Hohenloher pear brandy" if the raw materials are produced exclusively in the region and the spirit is also distilled there, said Agriculture Minister Peter Hauk (CDU) in Stuttgart on Friday.

"The EU-wide protection against imitation is a special appreciation of regional products, which makes it clear once again that fruit distilling is a special cultural heritage in various regions of Baden-Württemberg," said Hauk. The Hohenlohe fruit spirit would now stand in a row with Scottish whisky, Calvados or Black Forest kirsch.
