Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The railway can make a hook on one of the most lengthy and also most complex planning chapters of the "Stuttgart 21" project: Work on the construction of the important siding station in the district of Untertürkheim has begun. The railway had made several attempts to get a building permit.
The lawsuits against it did not slow down the project, nor did the requirement to resettle around 8,600 wall lizards by hand because they lived on the railway site that was no longer used. This is the penultimate of the eight sections of "Stuttgart 21" in the works, as Deutsche Bahn announced on Tuesday. The Gäubahn connection to the airport is still missing. A modern depot is to be built on the site of the former marshalling yard between Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt and Stuttgart-Untertürkheim. A total of 8.5 kilometers of track for 33 sidings will be laid on an area of almost twelve hectares. After the commissioning of Stuttgart, 21 trains will be parked on this. The new depot replaces the previous facility at Rosensteinpark.
The train station in Untertürkheim is an important part of the so-called ring concept, which turns the new underground station in Stuttgart, worth billions, into a through station. A 400 meter long system is also to be built there, with which the trains can be cleaned inside. However, opponents have long criticized the noise pollution and the lack of species protection.
