Bavaria: Cardinal Marx condemns actions by climate activists

Munich (dpa / lby) - The Archbishop of Munich and Freising, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, condemns controversial actions by climate activists. "I have absolutely no understanding of destroying a work of art," he said on Thursday in Munich at the end of the Freising Bishops' Conference. In their deliberations, the Bavarian bishops "briefly indicated that we disapprove of certain actions, especially if they endanger other people and if undemocratic slogans are used," said Marx, emphasizing: "We demonstrate differently." According to the decision of the Freising Bishops' Conference, the Catholic Church in Bavaria is to become a member of the so-called Bavarian Bloom Pact, which fights against the extinction of species.

The bishops of the seven Catholic Bavarian dioceses of Bamberg, Würzburg, Eichstätt, Regensburg, Augsburg, Passau, Munich and Freising are represented in the Freising Bishops' Conference - as well as, for historical reasons, the bishop of the Speyer diocese. According to the German Bishops' Conference (DBK), there were around six million Catholics in Bavaria in 2021.
