Bavaria: victim of ICE knife attack: attacker wanted to kill me

Munich (dpa / lby) - A victim of the knife attack in an ICE from Passau to Nuremberg a year ago, according to his own assessment, only survived with luck. "I am convinced that the attacker wanted to kill me that day," said the witness on Friday before the Munich Higher Regional Court in the trial against the alleged perpetrator. This is said to have suddenly given the 27-year-old eight stitches in the head, neck and chest area with a knife before attacking three other people and seriously injuring two of them.

This experience was "something you'll never forget. You can't put this experience down - it's a part of me now," said the witness, who defended himself against the attack with kicks. Most of his serious physical injuries have healed today, but the incident still affects him mentally. He doesn't like to leave the house on some days, hasn't used public transport since the incident, sees a danger in other people: "You don't know whether the next person doesn't have a knife in their pocket."

The trial of the alleged perpetrator began about two weeks ago. After the bloody attack on November 6, 2021, the indictment accuses him of attempted murder and dangerous bodily harm, among other things. At the beginning of the trial, the Higher Regional Court initially scheduled 24 days of hearings until December 23, 2022. A possible Islamist background and a possible mental illness of the man also play a role.
