Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Greifswalder want to keep the landfill hill and climb it themselves

Greifswald (dpa/mv) - The landfill hill north of Greifswald's old town should remain in place and be made accessible according to the will of the people of Greifswald. According to the preliminary results of a survey, more than 95 percent spoke out in favor of keeping the landfill as an artificial survey, the city announced on Monday. There is a very strong desire to use the landfill publicly, for example as a picnic area, for sports, as a toboggan run, playground or for events.

More than 500 questionnaires have already been filled out, and almost 90 other interested parties have participated online. In about five years, the landfill hill, which has been closed up to now, could become publicly accessible. Then the former landfill site would be "outgassed" and the corresponding environmental regulations would no longer apply. According to the city, the area on the opposite side of the Ryck River from the city center is 12 football pitches in size and 22 meters high at the highest point.
