Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Organ donation: Long waiting list despite high willingness

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - On the day of organ donation, Health Minister Stefanie Drese (SPD) appealed to the willingness of citizens to deal with the topic. The proportion of donors at 16.1 per million inhabitants in Germany in 2021 was higher than the national average of 11.2. Nevertheless, the absolute numbers are low, said Drese on Friday in Schwerin.

The minister emphasized the importance of education: "Surveys show that many people are theoretically willing to donate organs for transplantation after death. And at least 35 percent even have an organ donor card."

According to the information, 200 people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were waiting for an organ donation by the end of April 2022, based on data from the Eurotransplant Foundation. According to the Ministry of Health, however, the necessary operations are also at a low level because of the burden on the clinics from the pandemic. According to this, only six interventions were carried out between January and April of this year, in the same period of the previous year there were twice as many.
