North Rhine-Westphalia: 200 years of carnival: Session celebrated with special events

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Cologne Carnival, there will be special events in the coming session. The anniversary is "really something special, and it must be accompanied and embedded in such a way that it is not only noticed by the people of Cologne, but far beyond Cologne and the region," emphasized Mayor Henriette Reker on Thursday. A major communication campaign will accompany the anniversary year.

In addition to the classic session formats, a large number of concerts, exhibitions and festivals are planned, according to the city and the Cologne Carnival Festival Committee. The aim should be to show the diverse history of carnival in Cologne and its importance for society today. In addition, the anniversary should be integrated into the "International Museum Day" and the "Day of the Open Monument".

In addition, the city of Cologne will be honored as a "Foolish European City of Culture" as part of the anniversary. The spokesman for the Cologne Festival Committee, Christoph Kuckelkorn, announced that representatives of the carnival from all over Europe were then invited to the occasion of the award from the European Foolish Community next autumn.
