North Rhine-Westphalia: Reul: Attacks must not go unpunished

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) promised decisive action by the police after attacks on emergency services on New Year's Eve. Investigators are doing everything they can to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice. "It's important to realize that you can't do it with impunity," said Reul on Monday in the WDR2 interview.

According to the current state of investigation, the crimes were committed primarily by groups of young men. A total of 250 alleged perpetrators were arrested on New Year's Eve.

If firecrackers and rockets were fired specifically at emergency services and at people celebrating, that would be a new dimension of aggressiveness, the minister emphasized. "It's a dramatic process that you use it as a kind of weapon and accept that someone's health is at risk."

According to the police, there were similar incidents in numerous NRW cities. According to initial assessments, the cases in North Rhine-Westphalia did not have the dimensions of the brutal attacks on the police and fire brigade as in Berlin.
