Saxony-Anhalt: Suspended mayor removed from civil service

Haldensleben (dpa/sa) - The former non-party mayor of the city of Haldensleben in der Börde, Regina Blenkle, has finally been removed from office. The higher administrative court of the state of Saxony-Anhalt rejected the suspended mayor's appeal, the authority announced on Friday. This ends a long legal dispute about her suspension for the time being.

Blenkle was elected the new mayor of Haldensleben in the summer of 2015 with the support of the Free Independent Voters' Association. Since then there have been repeated tensions with the city council. Blenkle's personnel policy was heavily criticized with numerous warnings and transfers. In early 2017, the mayor was suspended by the city council. Disciplinary proceedings were under way.

Bernhard Hieber's (SPD) term as mayor of the city of Haldensleben began on Thursday. He will head the city administration for the next seven years. In April, Hieber prevailed in a runoff.
