Saxony: Kaßberg prison memorial receives dual leadership

Chemnitz (dpa / sn) - The new memorial to the Kaßberg prison in Chemnitz is headed by a dual leadership. The political scientist Steffi Lehmann and the historian Ingolf Notzke were named as the management duo after the selection process was completed, as the sponsoring association announced on Friday. This means that the course for the future of the memorial has also been set in terms of personnel, explained club boss Jürgen Renz. The future learning and memorial site is currently being built in part of the former prison on Chemnitz's Kaßberg and is scheduled to open next year.

The former Stasi prison once played an important role as a hub for the ransoming of political prisoners to the West and was therefore considered by many to be the "gateway to freedom". In addition to the memorial work, the future dual leadership also wants to establish the place as an institution for democracy education, it said. Both have previously worked for the Kaßberg Prison Learning and Memorial Association.
