Erfurt (dpa/th) - The members of the Thuringian state parliament commemorated the CDU politician Dagmar Schipanski with a minute's silence. She died in Ilmenau in September after a short, serious illness. The doctor of physics and native of Thuringia ran for the office of Federal President in 1999. She was a member of parliament, minister and president of the state parliament in Erfurt. "We have lost a fighter for democracy, for equality and a strong woman in our midst," said State President Birgit Pommer.
Schipanski was a member of the federal presidium for many years and was a member of the federal executive board of the CDU until 2022. She was the first woman to head the Science Council of the Federal Republic and rector of a technical university.
