Escape ends in accident: smuggler gives chase with police

In Saxony, the police caught a suspected smuggler. The 21-year-old Syrian almost ran over a police officer while trying to flee. With him, seven refugees who were probably sitting in the car were picked up.

Presumably because of a previous smuggling of refugees, a man in Saxony gave himself a ruthless chase with the police. The 21-year-old suspect from Syria almost ran over a police officer, and a police officer fired shots at the tires of the getaway car, the police said.

Accordingly, a police patrol wanted to control the man on Autobahn 4. Instead of stopping, he drove towards Dresden at high speed. During the chase, the man left the highway near Salzenforst and fled overland. When he stopped during another control attempt, the man continued to maneuver and almost ran over the police officer.

The escape ended on the Altmarkt in Bischofswerda. There the car crashed into a bollard and another parked car and drove down a flight of stairs. According to the police, the driver tried to flee on foot, but was soon caught. According to initial investigations, his car was fully occupied shortly before. Federal police picked up seven refugees who were believed to have been in the car.
