North Rhine-Westphalia: Flood Committee: SPD threatens again with the Constitutional Court

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - In the dispute over the completeness of the files for the flood investigation committee of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament, the SPD is again threatening the constitutional court. After the third hearing of witnesses by NRW municipal minister Ina Scharrenbach (CDU) on Monday, SPD chairman René Schneider gave her a final ultimatum. If Scharrenbach does not deliver all the missing documents by Tuesday, the rights of the committee would have to be enforced before the Constitutional Court.

The minister has repeatedly referred to the fact that her office had delivered all the files pertaining to the subject of the investigation. Everything else that the SPD demands or asks is not covered by the investigation order, she repeated on Monday. She also complained of procedural errors. The committee chairman Sven Wolf (SPD) stated that there were different views about the scope of the order and further interpretations.

The order stipulates: "The investigation period extends from July 9th, 2021 to September 9th, 2021. If expert opinions or investigations for the processing of the flood disaster were prepared after the end of the investigation period, these are recorded differently."

The heavy rain and the flood on 14./15. July 2021 was the worst natural disaster in the history of North Rhine-Westphalia. In the flood of the century, 49 people died in NRW alone. Tens of thousands of people in around 180 communities were affected.
