He met a lot of trans kids: why Radcliffe chose J.K. Rowling's statements intervened

When author J.K. Rowling made disparaging remarks about gender identities a few years ago, but almost all the stars of the "Harry Potter" films are opposed to her. Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe now explains his reaction with his own moral claim.

More than two years ago, star author J.K. Rowling's anti-transgender views drew negative headlines and raised eyebrows among several Harry Potter fans. As is well known, superstar Daniel Radcliffe brought Rowling's character Harry Potter to life on the big screen - and just a few days after the author's statements at the beginning of June 2020, he publicly opposed the 57-year-old. In a new interview with IndieWire, Radcliffe looks back on the time and explains why he did it. "I don't think I would have been able to look in the mirror anymore if I hadn't said something," the actor said.

"Harry Potter" star Radcliffe explains in an interview that he has met "so many genderqueer and trans kids and young people" who have identified with the "Harry Potter" book and film series in this regard. "When I saw that they were injured that day, I wanted them to know that not everyone in the franchise feels that way," explains the 33-year-old, adding, "It was really important."

Author Rowling attracted negative attention in the summer of 2020 with a whole series of anti-transgender views. Actor Radcliffe had responded to her statements at the time with an open letter that had been published on the website "The Trevor Project". In it, the 33-year-old wrote: "It is clear that we must do more to support transgender and non-binary people. We should not invalidate their identities and not cause further suffering."

In addition, he wrote, "To anyone who now feels that their experience of the books has been clouded or diminished, I am deeply sorry that these comments have caused you pain." Radcliffe has been vocal in support of The Trevor Project since 2010. The organization operates the world's largest crisis hotline for LGBTQ youth.
