Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Google and Apple photograph streets for map services

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - According to the state data protection officer in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the IT companies Apple and Google will be back on the streets with camera cars by the end of June. The goal is the "updating and re-recording of street views and building fronts" for their map services, said data protection officer Heinz Müller on Friday in Schwerin.

In this context, Müller wants to draw the public's attention to their rights of objection: "If you don't want your own house facade, the front yard or cars parked in front of it to be visible to anyone worldwide, you should actively exercise your right of objection."

As it goes on to say, everyone has the right to decide on the use of the recordings on the basis of basic data protection. According to the information, this is independent of whether it is about already used or new recordings, an objection is possible at any time. There is also support for this on the website of the data protection officer.
