Saxony-Anhalt: Ministry: Accommodation for those seeking protection is becoming more difficult

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The accommodation of those seeking protection is becoming more difficult in Saxony-Anhalt, both for the initial reception facilities for asylum seekers and for the municipalities. "Saxony-Anhalt can currently still cope with the situation. However, there is a real risk that the municipalities could be dependent on emergency accommodation for a longer period of time. The municipalities report that they can hardly find housing at short notice," said the Ministry of the Interior in Magdeburg when asked . The situation can only be overcome with great commitment from everyone involved.

The ministry explained: "The inaction of the federal government is not helpful, since no relief is foreseeable with regard to foreigners who are obliged to leave the country." The federal government announced a repatriation offensive months ago, but there were no results. "In addition, there is a lack of an adequate contribution from the federal government to the accommodation costs," it said.

More than 2,500 new asylum seekers have already been registered this year in the initial reception center for asylum seekers (Zast). According to the Ministry of the Interior, it can be expected that the total number of arrivals from 2020 (2265) and 2021 (2995) will be exceeded this year. Planning, for example, for long-term renting of new accommodation is made more difficult because there are no reliable access forecasts from the federal government.

Shortly after Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine began, Saxony-Anhalt decided not to accommodate war refugees from Ukraine in the initial reception facilities for asylum seekers (Zast). They are distributed directly to the municipalities. The state has capacities for short-term interim accommodation. In mid-August of this year, around five percent of the war refugees who arrived from Ukraine were housed in emergency shelters. Following this short-term solution, they are to be given their own living space.
