Saxony-Anhalt: Longer deadline for property tax returns: State parliament discussed

The property tax return appears to many citizens as an impertinence. The response rate has been low so far. The state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt is now discussing the problems and a possible extension of the deadline.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - According to the Greens in the state parliament, the state government of Saxony-Anhalt should lobby the federal government for an extension of the deadline for submitting property tax returns until at least January 31, 2023. This is "a must," said Cornelia Lüddemann, leader of the Greens parliamentary group, with a view to the slow submission of property tax returns.

According to Lüddemann, only a small double-digit percentage of people in Saxony-Anhalt have submitted their property tax returns, but the previous deadline is October 31st. The topic is on the agenda in the state parliament on Thursday.

Support for Lüddemann's proposal comes from the AfD, among others: "We absolutely support that," said AfD co-group leader Ulrich Siegmund. People were not informed well enough and were overwhelmed.

The black-red-yellow coalition was also open. "In my view, postponing the date is the least that can be done," said Parliamentary Managing Director Rüdiger Erben. CDU faction leader Guido Heuer referred to the responsibility of the federal government. Practice shows, however, that the end of October is probably not the date to keep.

The Federal Constitutional Court had declared the previous calculation method for property tax to be unconstitutional. The new procedure should now take the value of real estate into account to a greater extent than before. Nationwide, all property must be revalued by the tax offices. On this basis, cities and municipalities then set the recalculated property tax, which is to be paid from 2025.
