Altenberg (dpa/sn) - Experts from the Saxony explosive ordnance disposal service blew up World War II ammunition in a forest near Altenberg (Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district) on Thursday. According to the police administration, 14 tank shells and one anti-aircraft and smoke grenade were destroyed. The explosion was unavoidable because the grenades could no longer be transported. The clearance site near Altenberg has existed since June 2014. A blasting site was located here in the post-war period.
However, the vast majority of the ordnance found in this area is not detonated. These should be taken to the explosive ordnance dismantling facility in Zeithain and disposed of there in a professional and environmentally friendly manner.
