Pat Carroll: Ursula voice actress from "Arielle" is dead

Pat Carroll is dead. The actress died on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the age of 95 from pneumonia in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Her daughter Kerry Karsian confirmed her death to The Hollywood Reporter. Carroll leaves behind three children and one grandson.

Carroll was best known for "Arielle, the Little Mermaid". In the original 1989 Disney film, she spoke and sang the evil sea witch Ursula. Carroll called the sorceress - half human, half octopus - one of her favorite roles. She lent her voice to Ursula in various offshoots: in the prequel series of the same name, in computer games or for attractions in Disney theme parks. Carroll returned in 2000 for The Little Mermaid 2, the home theater sequel. In it she spoke to Ursula's sister Morgana.

Long before "Arielle", however, Pat Carroll made a name for himself in show business. She made her debut in the 1948 film Hometown Girl. From the 1950s she was a regular guest star on TV comedy shows. Carroll won an Emmy for her performances on the Sid Ceasar (1922-2014) sketch show Caesar's Hour.

On stage she received much praise for her solo performance as the writer Gertrude Stein (1874-1946). She won a Grammy for the show's recording. In the late 1980s, she began her career as a voice actress for animated films, from "Arielle" to "Scooby-Doo" to "Goofy - The Movie".
