Police operation in Hamm: knife attacker injures people at the university

In the afternoon, several students overpowered a man who apparently stabbed people indiscriminately at the Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences. Three women and one man were injured in the incident, some seriously. The police are investigating the background.

At the Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences, a 34-year-old man attacked several people with a knife and injured four people, some of them seriously. He was overpowered by students and held until police arrived and arrested him.

The police were in large-scale operations in the afternoon, and special forces were also on site. However, one does not assume that there is still a danger on campus, said a police spokesman. The 34-year-old is probably a lone perpetrator. Whether he is or was a student at the university is just as unclear as the possible background to the attack.

According to initial findings, the man entered the university building around 3:30 p.m. and attacked people in the corridors with his knife. Then he headed for a lecture hall. There he was overpowered by the students. The four injured are three women and one man. One victim's injuries were so serious that he had to be flown to a hospital by helicopter, the police spokesman said.

The emergency services warned on Twitter: "We are on site with strong police forces and ask you to avoid this area."
